Helpful Information

The rutted King’s Road leads our travelers to the foot of a broad hill that holds the walled village of Winterhaven. The village is nestled in the southern foothills of the Cairngorm Peaks. The walls are weathered stone topped by defensive palisades. Small thatched homes stand around Winterhaven, each fronting a small piece of farmland or pasture. Beyond the farms to the west and south lie dark woods, and to the north, tall mountain peaks. The first place the party travels to is the welcoming Wrafton’s Inn. This spacious inn and tavern serves as the public house for the region. Salvana Wrafton,Wrafton’s owner and proprietor,is friendly and open to the party, offering a quick smile and a warm welcome.

Lord Padraig, the town’s lord visits Wrafton’s. All those present doff their hats and call him Lord, after which he retreats to a corner table and sips beer. The party buys him a pitcher of beer and he talks with them.

Valthrun the Prescient: Valthrun is a sage and scholar who lives in a tower within Winterhaven’s walls. The party speaks to him and agrees to find out information about the mysterious Keep.

Trouble with Kobolds

As they travel towards Winterhaven, the party notices footprints leading up and down the road, many of which were made by small, clawed feet. Small creatures hiding behind the rocks spring into view and begin to move towards the heroes. With a shriek, the small humanoids attack. Scaled and rust-colored, they have reptilian heads and tails. After a tough battle, the party defeats the kobolds who fight to the last. They find a very evil looking medallion in the brush with an octopuslike head.

Journey to Winterhaven

As the adventure begins, our heroes are living in the small village of Bellport. Due to to disturbing dreams that they have been having, the four friends decide to seek the aid of their old friend and mentor, Douven Staul. In fact, the symbol in their dream is so vivid that one of them has sketched it on a piece of parchment. The characters feel that Douven may be able to help them to decipher the mysterious image, and interpret what this cryptic dream may mean. This man trained them for a life of adventure and had bade his friends farewell three months ago and headed for Winterhaven. Douven, a rabid explorer of old ruins, had found a map that revealed the location of a dragon’s tomb not far from the village. He figured if a dragon was buried there, why not also its hoard? Douven is a very famous adventure from the village of Bellport with tremendous influence and popularity. The party is able to get passage to Winterhaven via the road to Ogburg. Days later, our heroes find themselves traveling down a road that hasn’t been maintained in nearly a hundred years. They are traveling through a dangerous wilderness toward the small town of Winterhaven.

The characters start by traveling west along the old King’s Road toward Winterhaven. Before they reach the town, however, they are ambushed by a group of kobolds.

The Dream
A blog of my campaign

The dream is always the same:

Darkness…You hear a sickening sound like a suction or a bloated sack bursting. Then the chanting in cold, guttural voices: “Ph’nglui mglw’nafh ? R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn…Ph’nglui mglw’nafh ? R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn…PH’NGLUI MGLW’NAFH ? R’LYEH WGAH’NAGL FHTAGN!!!!” Then the darkness fades and you see a black ocean under a sickly greenish hued moon. It stretches as far as the eye can see. A symbol flashes before your eyes:

Then something monstrous starts to come up out of the sea—a horror that you cannot even imagine. You scream. You awake in a cold sweat. The sheets are soaked, and your heart is pounding in your chest. It is the fourth consecutive night you have had the dream. What does it mean? It must stop…or you must find its hidden meaning.
